On November 7th, CivicActions launched the WITNESS Video Hub, (more information about the Hub can be found here on our site).

Since it was founded 15 years ago by musician Peter Gabriel WITNESS has used video and, more recently, online technologies to open the eyes of the world to human rights violations. For most of that time, they have helped on-the-ground organizations document human rights violations by providing cameras and support to document these violations.

A few years ago, they saw the possibilities and the inevitability of user-generated video, and thus began planning The Hub, a grassroots-driven, participatory media website that enables anyone anywhere in the world with access to the internet to upload, share, discuss and take action around human rights-related media and resources. The Hub empowers organizations, networks, groups and individuals around the world to bring their human rights stories and campaigns global attention.

Working with the incredible team at WITNESS, CivicActions built a robust and full featured video upload, conversion (transcoding), and playback suite for the Drupal content management system, called Media Mover. With Media Mover at its core, the site enables users to upload and categorize video with a comprehensive vocabulary including both geography and issues. This system of organization allows users to connect easily find, watching and share relevant videos, and then join groups and campaigns around the world to effect change.
